Welcome to the Department of French

We are living in Marshall McLuhan's global village.  With communication technologies that foster economic, cultural and linguistic exchange undreamt of by previous generations, the ability to comprehend and communicate with other cultures is becoming a fundamental aspect to modern life.

French, second only to English, is one of the most widespread international languages with an estimated 300 million native and second language speakers worldwide. If you are a student contemplating a career in foreign affairs, international relations, journalism, communications or translation, the ability to speak, read and write French is an essential skill valued greatly by potential employers.

At the undergraduate level, the Department of French offers a BA Honours major, a BA major as well as a minor in French.  With select graduate study bursaries available, graduate students may pursue a Master's degree in French Studies within the department.  With varied research interests and expertise, the dynamic French Department faculty excels in delivering language, culture, linguistics, translation and literature courses.

By strictly limiting class sizes, students in the French Department enjoy a personalized and supportive learning environment where faculty members are easily accessible and committed to the success of every student.
