University of Regina Limnology Laboratory

Welcome to the Limnology Laboratory's Home Page!

The laboratory is part of the Biology Department at the University of Regina, which is located in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada. The lab is supervised by Dr. Peter Leavitt. The following pages give a bit of an overview of the work being done in the lab. If you would like to contact us, our address is:

 WHAT IS LIMNOLOGY?

Limnology is the study of freshwater. The word comes from the Greek prefix Limne- meaning lake or marsh. Limnologists study the physical, chemical, geological and biological components of lakes, rivers, and streams. As far as sciences go, Limnology is relatively new, having only really started in the late 19th century. Realizing the importance of our aquatic resources led to increased research in this field. The importance of freshwater ecosystems to humans, and our detrimental impacts on these systems as lead to increased growth in the field. Today, aquatic ecology is very diverse, as can be seen by our current research

WHERE WE ARE

The University of Regina campus (foreground) is located next to one of the largest inner city parks in Canada. Wascana Lake, five minutes from the university, provides interesting research opportunities for our lab as well as students in undergraduate limnology courses. The lake also serves as a waterfowl sanctuary and wetland area within the city boundary.

WHERE WE WORK

The Qu'Appelle Valley, approximately 45 Km north of Regina has been the site for many of our research projects. Over the past three years surveys and experiments have been conducted on six of the Qu'Appelle Valley lakes. The work in this area is ongoing. Specific project details can be seen from the current research menu.
