Conferences - U of R sponsored
Before Confederation, government policy was to encourage the "gradual civilization" of "Indians", namely their assimilation into the lower reaches of the working class in Canada. Over a century and a half later, Canada is still working towards this objective: the assimilation of Indigenous peoples and the disappearance of "registered Indians". This presentation considers the Canadian government's current initiatives toward Indigenous peoples, placing them in the context of the long policy of assimilation.
