Interdisciplinary Programs

Interdisciplinary Programs

The graduate programs in Interdisciplinary Studies in Fine Arts offer both a studies-based Master of Arts (MA) and a practice-based Master of Fine Arts (MFA). In both cases, students are required to complete projects which integrate knowledge from two to four distinct traditional disciplines, one of which must be a Fine Arts discipline.

In the MA and MFA, traditional skills and specializations are usefully augmented and contextualized by a Fine Arts perspective and a cross-disciplinary approach. The graduate programs offer core theoretical seminars but their strength lies in the integrity and commitment of the diverse range of academics, artists and staff who have developed this stream. These include participants from the Faculty of Fine Arts, as well as their partners in the Saskatchewan Indian Federated College and throughout the University of Regina.

As society moves towards information economies, cultural and entertainment sectors are rapidly emerging as driving forces in change. In this environment, Fine Arts and its disciplines are faced with the opportunity to expand beyond traditional boundaries. As teachers we prepare students for careers in the realm of culture; as intellectuals, we share ideas about culture with the intention of increasing our appreciation and understanding of the human experience; and, as artists and researchers, we engage with the pragmatics of making culture. In taking culture seriously, we provide students with an opportunity to engage with social meaning in ways that they find relevant to their own lives. Our programs are for those who see the Fine Arts as not only supplements to history but actual generative mechanisms in that history.
