Introduction to Mass Media

An introduction to analysis and discussion of the mass media of communication in modern industrial social structures. Some time will be devoted to the historical evolution of the mass media and their impact on selected fields of human endeavour.

General Methods of Statistics

A course designed to acquaint the student with the basic methods of statistics. It stresses the advantages, limitations and misuses of analytical techniques. The illustrative material used will be carefully chosen and balanced with reference to the problems and materials in the various disciplines in the social sciences. Students may not receive credit for both SOST 201 and STAT 151.
Note: SOST 201 is a prerequisite for some courses in other departments. Students doing double majors should be sure to take SOST 201 in sequence in order to receive credit for it.
Prerequisite: Any 100-level course in the social sciences.

Social Science Methodology

A course designed to familiarize the student with the potential and limitations of scientific analysis in the social sciences. Emphasis will be placed on the problems encountered in the selection, observation, classification, and quantification of social phenomena.
Prerequisite: Any 100-level course in the social sciences. It is recommended that students complete at least 30 credit hours before taking this course.

Critical Analysis of Film, Television, and the Press

The course will examine in detail the way in which the media help to shape public consciousness regarding selected social issues such as labour, women, minorities, racism, and rural life. The selected social issues to be dealt with will vary from year to year.

The Status of Women in Contemporary Society

An analysis of the status of women in different societies. The course will use material from different disciplines. The course may focus on the status of women in contemporary Western society, or may take a comparative approach in which different kinds of societies are analyzed.

Applied Methods: Quantitative Approaches

In this course, students will produce and analyze quantitative data, using a survey and other methods. Students will be introduced to computer programs and use these to assist in writing reports and papers that analyze the data. This class is intended for sociology majors.
Prerequisites: SOST 201 or STAT 151, SOST 203, and SOC 250, or permission of department head.

This course will be a practical exploration of the principles and methods of interpretive sociology, including content analysis, hermeneutics, semiotics, and other forms of discourse and media analysis or permission of department head.
