POLICE STUDIES PROGRAM
This program is a four-year, 120-credit-hour degree program leading to a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Police Studies and employment with a Saskatchewan police force. It is a joint venture of the University of Regina Faculty of Arts and the Saskatchewan Police College.
ADMISSION
The first stage of the program is two years (60 credit hours) of academic studies designated pre-police studies. Admission to pre-police studies is open to any student who is admissible to the Faculty of Arts (see page 13).
Admission to the second stage of the program, also two years (60 credit hours), is competitive. Students who are certified to have completed pre-Police Studies with the minimum required WPA of 65% will apply for employment with a Saskatchewan police service, and, if accepted, will proceed to year 3 of the BA program.
PRE-POLICE STUDIES
The courses required to complete pre-police studies are listed below and on page 376. Students must have a minimum WPA of 65% on the required courses in order to be considered for admission to the third year of the BA in Police Studies (see above).
BACHELOR OF ARTS (BA) IN POLICE STUDIES
The BA in police studies is a four-year, 120-credit-hour degree, structured as follows:
1. Core requirements of the Faculty of Arts for four-year programs (for information about usual course choices and restrictions for the second language, logic/math, natural science, and fine arts requirements, see page 63): ENGL 100 and 110; One course in a language other than English numbered 102 or higher; one of LGC 100, PHIL 250, or a university-level mathematics course; one natural science course involving laboratory work; one course from the Faculty of Fine Arts.
2. Courses required for pre-Police Studies (these courses also meet the Faculty's remaining core requirements): INST 100; PAS 270; PSCI 230; RLST 100; WMST 100; Three of ANTH 100, ECON 100, PSYC 100, SOC 100.
3. An interdisciplinary major: GEOG 210; HIST 206 or 207; HJ 310, 315, 331, and 332; PHIL 272 and 274; PSCI 334; SOC 215 and 315; SOST 203.
4. Two semesters of professional training (see below).
5. Six open electives: these are free choices. The following courses are recommended but not required: CS 100, ECON 336, HIST 219 and 319, PAS 246, SW 300. See page 64 for additional information about electives.

PROFESSIONAL TRAINING
Professional training for the BA in Police Studies comprises a semester at the Saskatchewan Police College (University of Regina campus), for which students receive 9 hours of transfer credit, and a 15-credit-hour, one-semester internship with the sponsoring Saskatchewan police service. Acceptance into the Saskatchewan Police College is governed by recruitment provisions of the Saskatchewan Police Act. Students are advised to consult the Act.
Students who are dismissed from their police service position before completing the internship will be required to discontinue indefinitely from the BA in Police Studies.
MINIMUM WPAS FOR GRADUATION
· Program: 65%
· Major: 65%
The program WPA is calculated on all courses used in the program. The major WPA is calculated on the course requirements of the interdisciplinary major.
SPECIAL MENTIONS
· Distinction: awarded by the Faculty for a graduating program WPA of at least 80%.
· Great Distinction: awarded by the Faculty for a graduating program WPA of at least 85%.
MODIFIED COURSE PREREQUISITES
Normal prerequisites for some courses may be waived for students in pre-police studies or the BA in Police Studies. Students are responsible for any additional work required to fill gaps in their knowledge. Please consult the Arts Records Office or your Federated College's Academic or Registrar's Office.
