GERMAN
Students with Grade 12 standing in German will not normally receive credit for GER 100 and 101. However, students who completed German 30 (Grade 12) five or more years ago and have not taken any German courses in the interim may choose to satisfy the second language requirement for the BA by taking GER 100, 101, and 200.

No previous knowledge of German expected. Acquisition of elementary tools of communication. Use of essential concepts and speech acts with their language structures. Printed and electronic learning materials.

Communicative strategies and structures. Language reception and expression. Overview of foundations of syntax and grammar. Printed and electronic learning materials.
Prerequisite: GER 100. Students with a good standing in Grade 11 German may enrol in this course with permission of the head of the Department of Germanic Studies.

Intermediate German I

Expansion of communicative strategies and skills and development of more detailed cognitive awareness of language structures. Free expression in various contexts. Printed and electronic learning materials.
Prerequisite: Grade 12 German or GER 101 or permission of the head of the Department of Germanic Studies.
