Mandarin for Beginners I

Introduction to the Chinese language and culture. Emphasis will be on developing listening and speaking skills, including the basic sound system, with the objective of engaging in survival level conversations. Written characters will be introduced gradually. Students may not receive credit for both MAND 100 and MAND 110.

Mandarin for Beginners II

This course is a continuation of MAND 100. Emphasis will be on further development of language use in daily situations. The learners will be involved in various experiences with the language in meaningful contexts. Students may not receive credit for MAND 101 and MAND 110.
Prerequisite: MAND 100 or permission of the Language Institute.

Mandarin for Beginners III

This course will continue to introduce Chinese language and culture. It will focus on linguistic functions, cultural knowledge, and communication skills. The student should be capable of basic linguistic survival in the host country. Students may not receive credit for MAND 102 and MAND 110.
Prerequisite: MAND 101 or permission of the Language Institute.

Intermediate Mandarin I

This course is designed to further develop the students' language and cultural skills from the basis provided by the beginner levels. Emphasis is on listening and speaking skills, supported by appropriate levels of reading and writing. Students may not receive credit for MAND 200 and MAND
210.
Prerequisite: MAND 102 or 110 or permission of the Language Institute.

Intermediate Mandarin II

While listening comprehension and oral production will continue to be the main emphasis of the course, cognitive insight into the structure of the language, as well as the further development of reading and writing skills, are gradually introduced. Students may not receive credit for MAND 201 and MAND 210.
Prerequisite: MAND 200 or permission of the Language Institute.

Intermediate Mandarin III
3:3-1
This course will bring students to an intermediate level of proficiency in language and cultural communication, which will allow them to function successfully in the target community. Language skills, cultural knowledge, and appreciation continue as important elements. Students may not receive
credit for MAND 202 and MAND 210.
Prerequisite: MAND 201 or permission of the Language Institute.
