SPANISH PLACEMENT TESTING
1. Students with no background in Spanish will register in SPAN 100.
2. Students who have had formal training in Spanish or who have lived in a Spanish-speaking environment must consult the Language Institute for placement before registering in a Spanish course.
Students should register for the Placement test in person or by phone at the Language Institute (585-4177). Please consult the Language Institute for Placement Test schedule.

Spanish for Beginners I

Introduction to the Spanish language and to Spanish and Latin American cultures. Emphasis will be on developing listening and speaking skills, with the objective of engaging in survival level conversations in a culturally appropriate manner. Students may not receive credit for both SPAN 100 and SPAN 110.

Spanish for Beginners II

This course is a continuation of the introductory course (SPAN 100). Emphasis is on further development of language use in daily situations, supported by appropriate levels of grammar, reading and writing skill development, and cultural learning. Students may not receive credit for both SPAN 101 and SPAN 110.
Prerequisite: SPAN 100 or permission of the Language Institute.

Spanish for Beginners III

Emphasis is on deepening cultural knowledge, expanding knowledge of linguistic functions, and developing grammatical, reading, and writing proficiency. The student should be capable of basic linguistic survival in the host community at the end of this course. Students may not receive credit for both SPAN 102 and SPAN 110.
Prerequisite: SPAN 101 or permission of the Language Institute.

Intermediate Spanish I

Emphasis is on increasing vocabulary and the range of linguistic functions so that the student can interact appropriately in simple conversations as well as produce simple, grammatically correct prose. Students may not receive credit for both SPAN 200 and SPAN 210.
Prerequisite: SPAN 102 or 110 or permission of the Language Institute.

Intermediate Spanish II

While listening comprehension and oral production continue to be the main emphasis, cognitive insight into the structure of the language as well as the further development of reading and writing skills are gradually introduced. Students may not receive credit for both SPAN 201 and SPAN 210.
Prerequisite: SPAN 200 or permission of the Language Institute.

Intermediate Spanish III

The purpose of this course is to bring the students to an intermediate level of proficiency in language and cultural communication which will allow them to function successfully in the host community. Students may not receive credit for both SPAN 202 and SPAN 210.
Prerequisite: SPAN 201 or permission of the Language Institute.
