LANGUAGE INSTITUTE - SASKATCHEWAN CENTRE FOR INTERNATIONAL LANGUAGES - SCIL
SCIL was first instituted in 1988 as a non-profit, cooperative program sponsored by the University of Regina, Luther College, and Saskatchewan Education. In the spring of 1995, SCIL became one of the instructional components of the Language Institute, University of Regina. The original mandate to deliver university accredited, intensive courses in international languages continues under the new structure. SCIL serves a wide clientele including students, business people, government employees, and the community at large with its language courses as well as its translation and interpretation service.
INTENSIVE COURSES IN LANGUAGE AND COMMUNICATION
Intensive courses (9 credit hours) leading to a working knowledge of a language and an appreciation of its culture are offered in Spring and Summer each year. These courses emphasize oral fluency, supported by appropriate levels of reading and writing.
The following apply to students registering in their first intensive language course:
· students with no background in their selected language will register in 110;
· students who have lived in an environment where their selected language is spoken and students who have had formal training must consult the Language Institute before registering.
Note: Students with Grade 12 standing in their selected language will not receive credit for 110. For students with no background, 110 satisfies the language requirements of the BA.
The following intensive courses have been approved by the Faculty of Arts and carry full degree program credit.
