Intensive Mandarin for Beginners

Introduction to the Chinese language and culture. Students will progress to functional competence in speaking and listening, within a relatively narrow range of topic areas. The course will also gradually introduce the Chinese writing system. Students may not receive credit for MAND 110 and MAND 100, 101, or 102.
Prerequisite: Permission of Language Institute.
Note: Students who speak another Chinese dialect must register in MAND 211 or MAND 311.

Intensive Intermediate Mandarin

The purpose of this intensive course is to bring students to a level of proficiency in language and cultural communication which will allow them to function within the target community. Students may not receive credit for MAND 210 and MAND 200, 201, or 202.
Prerequisite: MAND 102 or 110 or permission of the Language Institute.
Note: Students who speak another Chinese dialect must register in MAND 211 or MAND 311.

Intensive Mandarin for speakers of Non-Mandarin (Putonghua) Chinese Dialects

This course introduces the sound system of Mandarin, including Pinyin and tones; develops survival level conversation skills and the ability to present on uncomplicated, non-technical topics; and introduces the socio-political culture of China. Simplified characters are introduced gradually.
Note: Restricted to speakers of non-Mandarin (Putonghua) Chinese dialects.

Intensive Advanced Mandarin for Speakers of Non-Mandarin (Putonghua) Chinese Dialects

This course continues from the intermediate level by focussing on the achievement of native-like pronunciation and intonation; by developing the ability to converse/narrate on a variety of topics with appropriate grammar while coping with cultural complications; and to read/write non-technical materials in simplified characters.
Prerequisite: MAND 211 or permission of the Language Institute.
Note: Restricted to speakers of non-Mandarin (Putonghua) Chinese dialects.
