Presentations, workshops, and conferences on academic development and transition to higher education are routinely scheduled for potential and continuing students as well as interested scholarly and community organizations.
ENTRANCE PROGRAM (MATURE ADMISSION)
The mature admission policy is designed to provide anyone who does not meet the secondary or post-secondary admission requirements of the Faculty of choice and is 21 years of age or older with an opportunity to obtain a University of Regina degree in Administration, Arts, Education, Engineering, Fine Arts, Kinesiology and Health Studies, Science, and Social Work.
EP students register in first-year University courses of which they have met the prerequisites in on- or off-campus locations as part- or full-time students.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
Canadian citizens or landed immigrants who satisfy the English proficiency requirement of the University may be admitted if applicants are at least 21 years of age prior to the beginning of the semester for which they apply.
· Mature students may not attend the spring and summer sessions as their first semester.
· Students applying for transfer to EP from a University of Regina Faculty or special program must have a minimum UGPA of 60% based on all courses taken at the University of Regina. Qualified students must qualify for transfer to the degree program of choice within the first 24 credit hours attempted in the degree program. The student's academic performance will be evaluated according to Faculty Transfer Requirements and Faculty Action.
· Mature admission students who complete secondary or postsecondary requirements for admission to a Faculty are eligible for admission to that Faculty.
· A student who has been required to discontinue studies at another institution is eligible to apply for admission to the Entrance Program at the University of Regina. The student should write a letter of petition to the EP Appeals Committee, which will decide whether or not the student is admissible and any conditions of continuation. The decision of the Committee is final.
· Students applying for readmission after a period of discontinuance must apply by writing a letter to the c/o Secretary to the Registrar, Chair of the EP Appeals Committee, Room 210, Administration-Humanities Bldg., University of Regina, Regina, SK., S4S 0A2. Readmission may be granted if the student presents a very good case, including any supporting documentation, for being allowed to continue. Students must apply by the deadline for readmission to a particular semester. Deadlines are strictly enforced.
The University of Regina reserves the right to refuse admission even when the stated requirements for entrance have been satisfied.
TRANSFER CREDIT
An evaluation of transfer credit from other post-secondary institutions should be requested from First-year Services prior to registration. The evaluation of transfer credit varies between degree programs. In EP, transfer credit is evaluated to select appropriate courses for a degree program. A further evaluation of the amount of credit towards a degree program will occur when the student transfers to a degree program.
AWARDS
See the Awards for Mature Students section of this calendar on page 2.
DEFERRED EXAMINATIONS AND MEDICAL OR COMPASSIONATE WITHDRAWALS
Students who are unable to complete a course for serious medical or personal reasons should consult First-year Services as quickly as possible. Consult the main Academic Regulations section on page 2 of this Calendar for more information.
HONOUR LIST
In order to be named to the Mature Admission Honour List, students must attain an average of at least 85% in a given semester on a minimum of 12 credit hours of numerically graded courses.
REGISTRATION
Students are responsible for ensuring that program requirements are met at each stage of their progress. Courses are selected according to the prerequisites of the course (See course descriptions in this Calendar) and the requirements of a degree program.
For general registration regulations, refer to the section on Registration in this Calendar. Mature admission students are subject to the following additional restrictions:
1. limited to registering in a maximum of 12 credit hours per semester.
2. required to register in University 100, where available, within the first 12 credit hours towards the degree program.
3. strongly encouraged to register in University 110 during the first year of the degree program.
4. may register in more than 12 credit hours per semester if they:
· have the equivalent of 12 credit hours of transfer credit from another recognized post-secondary institution with a grade point average of 70% or better.
· register in University 100 or University 110.
· achieve a grade point average of 70% or better on the first 12 credit hours at the University of Regina.
· satisfy the qualifications for transfer to the faculty of choice by the start of the semester in which they are registering.
FACULTY ACTION
In addition to the general University academic regulations outlined in this calendar, the following regulations are specific to mature admissions:
· The minimum University Grade Point Average (UGPA) based on completion of a minimum of 24 credit hours is 60.0%. Students who fail to meet this minimum are placed on "Academic Probation".
· If students fail to meet the minimum UGPA of 60% upon completion of an additional fifteen (15) GPA hours since the application of "Academic Probation", they will be required to discontinue (RTD) for two semesters from the University.
· Any full-time student receiving grades of NP and/or F in all courses in a given semester will immediately be required to discontinue from the University for two semesters.
· Students who fail more than 50% of their credit hours in a single semester shall receive a letter of academic advisement. The letter will indicate the implications of continued failure and requirement to seek academic advise before registering in courses. This regulation will not apply to students who register for three credit hours or fewer in the semester.
· "Academic Probation" and RTD rulings are recorded on the student's official transcript.
· Students' academic performance is evaluated following each semester, with the Spring and Summer semesters being treated as a single semester. Probation and RTD letters are mailed in May, September and January. When RTDs are assessed, they are effective immediately. Students who are not eligible for transfer into their Faculty of choice after registering in 36 credit hours (or 24 credit hours for students who were transferred to the mature admission status) are required to discontinue for three semesters.
· Students readmitted after the requirement to discontinue or any faculty action who fail to meet the transfer requirements after registering in 15 credit hours will be required to discontinue indefinitely (two years minimum).
The average calculated for purposes of faculty action, scholarships, honours list, etc. is based on the most recent occurrence of all graded courses (including failures).
Students who are required to discontinue may appeal to the EP Appeals Committee. The requirement to discontinue will be set aside only in exceptional circumstances. Students may appeal by writing a letter which includes supporting documentation to: Chair of the EP Appeals Committee, Room 230, Dr. William Riddell Centre, University of Regina, Regina, SK., S4S 0A2. Deadlines for appeal are strictly enforced.
