Hopkins - who as UNESCO chair co-ordinates an international network of 36 teacher institutions from 35 countries, working on sustainable development issues - is also president of Info Green Ltd., a sustainability awareness firm based in Canada. In addition, he consults with private and public sector institutions concerning the public's understanding of the role that education should play in a sustainable future.
It is in this capacity that the Sustainable Campus Advisory Group (SCAG) at the University of Regina invited him to deliver a free public lecture in the Education Building Auditorium on Feb. 3, 7 p.m. (parking available in Lot 14). The lecture is titled "What Are Universities Doing to Achieve a Sustainable Future for our Planet? What Can They Do? An Evening with Charles Hopkins, CHAIR of the Canadian Response to the UN
Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (2005-2014)" Refreshments will be provided.
Professor Hopkins will be available to the press on Thursday morning as U of R celebrates "The Start of The U.N. Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (2005-2014) in Saskatchewan: The Role of the University of Regina." Hopkins will present information on the U.N. Decade of Education for Sustainable Development. As global leaders in sustainability U of R faculty, city and provincial government representatives will attend the meeting.
Hopkins will also speak to professors and students about integrating sustainability into teaching and research. Seminars will be held in the Language Institute Theatre with topics including:
· "The Role of Higher Education in A Sustainable Future" - Thurs., Feb. 3, noon. (Sponsored by Faculty of Education).
· "Exploring Research and Business Opportunities for Sustainable Development in a Global Context", meetings between - Fri., Feb. 4, 8:30 a.m.
· "The Vital Role of Students in Transforming the University Campus for Sustainability" - Fri., Feb. 4, 10:30 a.m.
