Update 1

Monday 25 January 2016

Dr Andrew Gaudes' current term as Dean of Business Administration concludes on 30 June 2017.

Per University policy on out-of-scope academic administrative appointments (available at http://www.uregina.ca/policy/browse-policy/policy-EMP-010-030.html), I recently initiated a conversation with Dean Gaudes about the possibility of a second term as Dean. He has agreed to consider this possibility, and I am therefore initiating the consultative process.

A rough timeline for that process follows. If required, it will be modified according to the needs of the Faculty and the availability of people involved in the review process:

  • Monday 25 January -- review process initiated and communicated to faculty, staff, students, and stakeholders
  • Tuesday 16 February -- Reappointment Committee membership announced
  • Thursday 18 February -- Dean Gaudes' statement of vision for a second term made publicly available; written input on the statement and on a second term for the Dean sought from faculty, staff, students, alumni, the broader University community, and external stakeholders
  • Friday 4 March -- deadline for written input to be received
  • Wednesday-Friday 9-11 March -- potential meeting dates for Reappointment Committee to review input and prepare recommendation

One of the first tasks in the process is to strike a Reappointment Committee with broad representation from the Faculty, the University, and external stakeholders. The Reappointment Committee will be structured as follows:

  • 6 faculty members from the Faculty of Business Administration, elected or appointed by means determined by the Faculty;
  • a APT or CUPE employee in the Faculty of Business Administration elected or appointed by means determined by APT and CUPE staff in the Faculty;
  • an undergraduate Business student elected or appointed by the Hill Business Students' Society;
  • a graduate Business student elected or appointed by the Levene Graduate Students' Association;
  • an alumnus or alumna of the Faculty of Business Administration elected or appointed by Business alumni;
  • a member of the Business Leaders Council elected or appointed by means determined by the Leaders Council;
  • a member of Deans' Council.

I will chair the Reappointment Committee, which will be supported in its work by Kristina Untereiner of the Provost's Office. Once its membership has been determined as noted above, the names of the members will be announced to the Faculty. Dean Gaudes has been asked to prepare a statement of his vision for the Faculty over the next five years, and it will be made public as noted above.

I have therefore asked faculty members in the Faculty of Business Administration to initiate a process leading to the election or appointment of 6 faculty members to the Reappointment Committee. I have also asked the student associations, the Business alumni, and APT/CUPE staff in Business to provide my office with the names of those they have chosen. The goal is to have the Reappointment Committee membership in place by Tuesday 16 February, and its membership announced that day.

Thomas Chase
Provost and Vice-President (Academic)
