Dave Button, M.Sc., P.Eng., P.M.P.

Mr. David Button (Dave) was appointed Vice-President (Administration) 1 July 2006 .  As Vice-President, Dave is responsible for the basic logistics of running the University.  The portfolio includes leadership responsibilities for:  Human Resources, Financial Services, Facilities Management, Information Services, Resource Planning, Enterprise Risk Management and Ancillary Services. University support requires operations and services equivalent to that of a small City.  The 13,000 students are served by 2400 employees of which 450 are faculty and 1250 are full time or term staff.  The overall operating budget of the University is approximately $130 Million dollars.  The Vision of the Office of the Vice President is to make the University of Regina a preferred place to Live, Work and Study.

Immediately prior to this appointment, Dave served for 11 years as the Associate Vice-President (Facilities and Planning) at the University of Regina.  During that time Dave also taught extensively in the area of Project Management as an Adjunct Professor in the faculties of Graduate Studies, Engineering, and Business.

Dave was born in Middleton, Nova Scotia and has lived and worked in virtually every province in Canada, as well as a number of places in Europe.  He has a degree in Civil Engineering from the Royal Military College in Kingston, and postgraduate degrees from the University of British Columbia (Planning) and the Canadian Forces Command and Staff College (pcsc).  He is a registered Professional Engineer, Project Management Professional, and Planner.

Prior to coming to the University of Regina in 1995, Dave served for 22 years in the Canadian Armed Forces as a Military Engineer providing planning and infrastructure services for bases and facilities in the Department of National Defence.  He retired as a Lieutenant Colonel having served as the senior Base Facility Engineer at bases in Halifax, Trenton, and Kamloops.  During that time, he also served at Maritime Command Headquarters as the Project and Base Development Planner for all naval facilities and projects across the country, and was an instructor in the Canadian Forces School of Military Engineering teaching graduate engineers and tradespersons in Human Resource Management, Labour Relations, and Project Management.

Dave joined the University of Regina in March 1995.  Since that time, the University has experienced a huge boom in construction that has more than doubled the size of the campus.  Much of this growth was led by the creation of the first University of Regina Campus Plan which was initiated and chaired by Dave.  The plan was updated in 2003 (available on this website) and includes directions for the growth of the campus well into the future.  A number of award winning buildings were constructed during this period.  Of particular significance was the 2005 Construction Owners Association of America award for Project Leadership for the grouping of facilities referred to as “2005 Summer Games Support Facilities” (Residences, Center for Kinesiology Health and Sport, Artificial Turf Field, and Academic Green).

Dave is a member of the following Associations and Boards:
