Title: Introduction to properly proximal groups

Abstract:

In this talk we introduce the concept of properly proximal groups, following a recent work of Boutonnet, Ioana and Peterson. This is a wide class of countable groups which contains in particular non-elementary hyperbolic groups and lattices in non-compact semi-simple Lie groups. As an application, we provide rigidity results for compact actions of $SL_d(\mathbb R)$, for $d\ge 3.$
