FAQ for Seniors' Tuition Waiver

Who may request a Seniors’ Tuition Waiver?

Anyone 65 years of age or older, in the term of registration, may request a tuition waiver.

Where do you get the Seniors’ Tuition Waiver Request Form?

Whether you fill out the form yourself, or you are being assisted by a specific faculty, the form can be accessed online or from the Registrar’s Office (AH 210).

Why do I need to fill out a Seniors’ Tuition Waiver Request Form?

Each term, when you register for a course, the tuition will then be viewable through your UR Self-Service account. Due to the course restrictions included in the new policy, the form facilitates a process to determine if qualifications for the waiver are met. Thus a request form must be submitted every term.

Are there deadlines for submitting a Seniors’ Tuition Waiver Request Form?

Yes. We encourage all students wanting to submit a request to do so as soon as possible. However, all requests must be received before the end of the term in which the course(s) is registered.

What is the maximum number of credit hours of tuition that may be waived?

Spring and Summer terms (May to August – e.g. 202220) – maximum 6 credit hours

Fall and Winter terms combined (September – April – e.g. 202230 + 202310) – maximum 15 credit hours

The Academic Year (May 1 – April 30) is used in determining these maximums.

What does the waiver cover?

The waiver applies to tuition only. Students are responsible for any material fees, laboratory fees, student fees, and other course-related costs.

When will I be notified if my request qualifies for a tuition waiver?

You will be notified about your request as soon as possible or within five business days. If the request qualifies, the tuition waiver will show up on your account after the end of the 50% refund period for the course (CRN).

Can a Seniors’ Tuition Waiver be requested if I want to audit a course?

Yes. The tuition waiver applies to registration as an audit or credit student in credit courses only.

What are the restrictions on the courses that result in not qualifying for a tuition waiver?

The following course restrictions are not qualified for the waiver:

  • graduate courses,
  • thesis or project supervision or maintenance of status for graduate students,
  • internships or co-op work placements,
  • exchange programs,
  • courses held outside Canada,
  • non-credit courses,
  • courses in fully on-line programs,
  • courses offered as part of a contract,
  • more than 15 credit hours total during fall and winter terms,
  • more than 6 credit hours total during the spring and summer terms,
  • courses filled with students paying tuition as of the add/drop date each term.

What happens if I am registered in a course that does not qualify for a tuition waiver?

If you are registered in a course(s) for which the tuition waiver is not granted based on the restrictions and you choose to remain registered in the course(s) the tuition payment will follow standard policy. If you choose to withdraw, you may do so in UR Self-Service or by contacting your Faculty or College office and the drop penalty will follow standard policy. The Registrar's Office does not withdraw a student from a course(s).

How will I be notified if my request qualifies for a tuition waiver?

A notification will be sent to your official @uregina.ca email address explaining the outcome of your request. Please be sure to check this email address regularly or contact the Registrar’s Office (AH 210) in person or at 306-585-4127.

I am a senior who previously benefited from a tuition waiver. What do I need to know?

Students who previously benefited from a tuition waiver for courses in their current program and were registered at the University prior to May 1, 2017 continue to be eligible for the tuition waiver until they complete the program, change programs, or withdraw from the program.

Please note the following important points:

  • all tuition waiver requests for audit courses will be considered, provided none of the above course restrictions apply to the audit course; and
  • all tuition waiver requests will be subject to the new restrictions if you complete your current program, change programs, or withdraw from the program you were registered in prior to May 1, 2017.

Who do I contact if I have questions about my request for the Seniors’ Tuition Waiver?

Please contact the Registrar’s Office at special.registration@uregina.ca, 306-585-4127, or come to the Registrar’s Office (AH 210) and we will be happy to assist you.
