The Department of Anthropology invites you to a public talk by Charisma Thomson. This talk will examine how people reconstruct their own and other's biographies, and connect with each other, through practices of creating and otherwise engaging with roadside memorials. These memorials are discussed as transformative sites which remain ritually charged from the moment they are created until they fall into a deteriorate state. They are theorized as spaces where individuals can attend to the biography, narrative, and remembering of deceased others, while negotiating and/or (re)presenting their own social identities and status within a kinship group or larger community.
All are welcome!
