Fri., Feb. 27, 2015 3:30 p.m.
Location: Room AH 348, Ad Hum Building, University of Regina main campus
The Department of English is pleased to announce the second Orlene Murad Academic Discussion of the winter semester.
Title: Disraeli, Scott's Historical Romances, and the Form of the Condition-of-England Novel: or What Kind of Story is Sybil?
Presenter: Dr. Nils Clausson
Date/Time: Friday, February 27 at 3:30 p.m.
Location: AH 348
Abstract:
Benjamin Disraeli's Sybil, or the Two Nations (1845) has been read almost exclusively as a social-problem (or condition-of-England) novel. But what if the novel is not as generically uniform as orthodox criticism has assumed? Dr. Clausson provocatively argues that Sybil exhibits generic affiliations with the historical novel popularized by Sir Walter Scott, and that the form of Sybil derives from the form of Scott's historical romances.
This talk will be followed by a reception in AH-349. All are warmly invited!
