Reticence and (Mis)recognition in the Classroom: Conceptualizing Religious Illiteracy

Presented by Erin Reid (The Centre for Civic Religious Literacy)

From debates about Bill 21 in Quebec, to protests against the sex education curriculum in Ontario, and resistance to Gay-Straight Alliances in Alberta schools – religion features prominently in recent public discourse on Canadian K-12 public education. Many have called for teachers to engage more competently with increasing religious diversity in the classrooms. Yet how can these educators take on this challenging task when they themselves lack religious literacy? In this talk, educator and researcher Erin Reid will suggest that greater attention must be paid to religious literacy in Canadian teacher education programs.

All are welcome!
