Troubleshooting Schedule Issues

Most classes are scheduled in one of the following three ways:

  • three 60-minute blocks  per week (50 minutes of class time and a 10-minute break between classes) at the same time of the day every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday (with the first class of the day starting at 8:30 a.m.)
  • two 90-minute blocks per week (75 minutes of class time and a 15-minute break between classes) at the same time of the day every Tuesday and Thursday (with the first class of the day starting at 8:30 a.m.)
  • one 180-minute block per week on a Monday through Thursday night starting at 7 p.m.

The University's online course catalogue (available through UR Self-Service) lists: the courses being offered in any given semester (not all classes are offered every semester), the time(s) at which those courses are scheduled (for many first and second year courses there will be multiple offerings, each in a different timeslot), the instructor for the course, any prerequisites, the number of seats still left in the course, and the scheduled date and time of any final exam.

Your job each semester is to pick classes that interest you, meet your program needs and are offered at times that don't conflict with one another or with your work or family commitments. Keep in mind that some courses have labs or seminars in addition to the scheduled classroom hours. You may also want to pay attention to scheduled final exam times to make sure that they aren't too close to one another. You can use this blank timetable worksheet (62 KB PDF ) to help you identify courses that are compatible with one another from a scheduling point of view.
