Music for Young Children

Music for Young Children (MYC) has provided enriching, empowering, and enjoyable music experiences since 1980. This child-centred music-learning system integrates keyboard, creative movement, rhythm, singing, ear training, sight reading, music theory, and composition to develop a firm, fundamental understanding of music for both children and parents. Our MYC program is led by Private Lesson instructor Megan Fries. MYC teachers meet specific piano-performance and music-theory qualifications, receive special program training, and are assessed to ensure consistently high music-education standards. By the end of the Moonbeams levels, children are well prepared for early intermediate piano studies or study in another instrument area.

For all MYC classes a last month's deposit plus materials are due at registration, with scheduled payments starting the first day of the first month of class.

  • Fall Term (Sep start): classes are 1hr long, $80/mnth for 10 months + (non-refundable) materials.
  • Winter Term (Jan start): classes are 1hr 15min long, $130/mnth for 6 months + (non-refundable) materials.

Unless otherwise indicated all classes below are open to beginners. If your child has previous piano playing experience, Private Lessons could be a better fit than MYC, as your child can learn at their own pace. Please contact the Program Coordinator if you have questions about this program.

More class information can be found in our online registration system. If we are currently offering one of the levels listed, a course link will be available below.

Sunshine (ages 3-4)

The youngest of the keyboard programs, it is the starting point of the MYC® Method for young beginners, building their foundation in music reading and playing the piano.  Students experience movement through beats and rhythms, as well as developing their fine motor skills with rhythm instrument ensemble playing.

Fall (Sep start):

Sunbeams (ages 5-6)

This is the entry point of the MYC® Method for 5-6 year old beginners. Vocabulary development is the focus for this age group - at this stage we introduce “big kid” terminology to introduce concepts, finger numbers, and keyboard geography.

Fall (Sep start):

Moonbeams (ages 7-9)

This is the entry point of the MYC® Method for 7-9 year olds.  The older beginner program is designed to support the students’ growing sense of independence.  Reading becomes the primary focus for gathering information, while the songs, ensembles and keyboard repertoire incorporate early piano literature, folk songs, technique and harmonization.

Fall (Sep start):

My Choice (ages 16+)

See our Group Music > Piano section.
