Certificate for Internationally Educated Teachers (IET)

The Certificate for IETs honours and builds upon prior training, knowledge, and experiences; facilitates IETs to obtain teacher certification in Saskatchewan; and provides opportunities for IETs to be more successful in securing employment and workforce integration.

This certificate includes 4 courses currently offered in elementary and secondary and related field experiences in ECS 101, ECS 303 and EFLD 415. The maximum length for this certificate completion is 5 years.

Admission Requirements

Saskatchewan Teacher’s Certificate Assessment letter from the Saskatchewan Professional Teachers Regulatory Board and Proficiency in English, according to the University of Regina Language Proficiency Regulations. Admission is available in all terms and will align with the University of Regina deadline dates.

Selection of Courses

Selection of courses is based on the following areas of need as identified by SPTRB, School Divisions, U of R Student Services and feedback from IETs:

  1. Organization & legal contexts of schooling; teacher professionalism in Canada and SK
  2. Learning theories & inclusive education in Saskatchewan
  3. Indigenization & Treaty Education
  4. Knowledge of curriculum, instruction, and assessment in Saskatchewan

Field Experiences

  1. One half-day a week for 8 weeks if registered in ECS 101, no field in ECS 102
  2. One full day a week for 8 weeks ECS 303
  3. One 6 week, 6 credit hour practicum/internship (EFLD415) in same classroom, wherever possible, as #2 placement.

Special IET Scholarship: Faculty of Education Dean's Scholarship

Eligibility criteria:

  • Enrolled in the Faculty of Education as an Education Special student or in one of the Certificate programs offered in conjunction with the Faculty of Education
  • Is an Internationally Educated Teacher (IET) who has a Bachelor of Education or equivalent teaching degree from a country other than Canada
  • Does not currently meet the teacher certification requirements in Saskatchewan
  • Required to complete a minimum 9 credit hours to gain teacher certification in Saskatchewan as outlined in the letter from Saskatchewan Professional Teachers Regulatory Board
  • Registered and remains registered in a minimum of 3.0 credit hours in the semester the award is presented
  • Financial need will be considered
  • Selection based on UGPA
