2019 Barbara Powell Memorial Lecture - Cherie Dimaline

Indigenous Futurisms: Apocalyptic Survival with Precedent

Presented by: Cherie Dimaline,
Writer, Editor, Author of "The Marrow Thieves"

Cherie Dimaline will discuss the ways Indigenous stories address dystopian potentials and speak to an uncertain future with authority born of recent and ongoing experience. Discussion includes a look at prevalent themes in modern speculative works and finding hope in the despair.

Cherie Dimaline is a writer and editor from the Georgian Bay M├ętis Community in Ontario. Her latest book, "The Marrow Thieves", won the 2017 Governor General's Award, was a selection for CBC's 2018 Canada Reads, and a #1 national bestseller for young readers. "The Marrow Thieves" was also named a Book of the Year on the National Public Radio, New York Public Library, and the Globe and Mail book lists. Dimaline recently signed a four-book deal with Penguin Random House and has joined the MFA faculty at the Institute for American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
