Addressing the Post-Settlement Social and Legal Needs of Asylum Seekers

Featuring: Dr. Patrick Keyzer, Research Professor of Law and Public Policy, LaTrobe University, Melbourne, Australia

Dr. Patrick Keyzer clerked for the Chief Justice of Australia from 1996 to 1998, and has practised as a barrister since 1999, including in the High Court and the United Nations Human Rights Committee. In 2010 he was shortlisted for an Australian Human Rights Award for his extensive pro bono work on behalf of people with disability, indigenous people, and prisoners. In 2015 he was President of the Australasian Law Teachers Association (now the Australian Law Academics Association). In 2016 he was admitted as a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Law. Patrick is currently working on a series of radio programs and podcasts with broadcaster Jane Lee telling the stories behind significant constitutional decisions of the High Court of Australia. Part of ABC Radio National's "History Listen", the episodes will be broadcast in early 2020.

Professor Keyzer will provide the keynote address, followed by a response entitled "Settlement: The Saskatchewan Experience" by Haidah Amirzadeh, Immigration and Refugee Law Lecturer, College of Law, University of Saskatchewan.

Discussion and audience Q&A will follow.
