Autoethnography as a Research Approach in Language Planning and Policy

Presenters: Rubina Khanam and Russell Fayant (SUNTEP), Faculty of Education, University of Regina

We will discuss the value of autoethnography as a research approach in the area of language planning and policy. We are involved in teacher education at the University of Regina and take interest in language planning and policy research. We come to language planning and policy research, however, from different positions: Rubina is Bangladeshi, a PhD candidate and a sessional lecturer in teacher education. Russell is Michif and a teacher educator in an Indigenous teacher education program. In spite of our cultural and geopolitical differences, we are connected by our experiences with European imperialism. One common interest we share is the value of stories because "stories remind us of who we are and of our belonging" (Kovach, 2009, p.94). Our stories are our personal experiences with language that we include in our language planning and policy research. Traditional research approaches in the area of language planning and policy explore language policy from a sociopolitical perspective at the national level; however, these approaches do not examine how language affects the lives of individuals. Therefore, we chose autoethnography as an approach in language planning and policy research.
