Captive Songs: Deaf Shame, Intergenerational Responsibility, and Deaf Same: Developing a Culturally Responsive Pedagogy in a Deaf Diaspora

Presenter: Joanne Weber, Faculty of Education, University of Regina

Abstract: I explore how the reference to the deaf diaspora where I live and work and to the deaf homelands as situated in large and vibrant deaf communities is a means of resistance to oppressive education practices concerning the teaching of deaf children and youth. I construct a posthumanist cartography, exploring affects within the context of Deaf Crows, a theatrical play that is an outcome of arts-based affective pedagogy (Hickey-Moody, 2013) in a small resource program for deaf students in a western Canadian city. Within the deaf diaspora in Saskatchewan, far away from large and vibrant deaf communities, the processes inherent within the production of Deaf Crows enabled me to move toward becoming a culturally responsive teacher by exercising intergenerational responsibility (Kusters, 2017) toward deaf students. Intergenerational responsibility toward deaf students is characterized by an urgency for the cultural, social and intellectual well-being of deaf students and a commitment to dismantling barriers that obstruct their learning potential (Kusters, 2017).
