China, North Korea & the U.S. - Prospects for Peace or War

Presented by: Gordon Houlden, Director, China Institute, University of Alberta

The situation in the Democratic People's Republic of North Korea has seen tumultuous developments in 2018, with a dramatic and unprecedented Summit meeting between President Trump and Kim Jong Un. Although it is not clear if the high-level dialogue between Pyongyang and Washington will prove successful, we have already seen a sustained improvement in relations between Pyongyang and Seoul.

Join us for a discussion with Gordon Houlden, Director of the China Institute at the University of Alberta, on the context of the situation in the Korean peninsula, an update on where we are now, and the road forward. Houlden will also discuss the current state of U.S.-China relations as well of those of China and Canada following the high-profile arrest of Huawei's Meng Wanzhou in Vancouver.

Gordon Houlden is the Director of the China Institute, Professor of Political Science and Adjust Professor of the Alberta School of Business at the University of Alberta. Before he joined the University of Alberta, he had a long serving career with the Canadian Foreign Service in Ottawa and abroad including postings in China, Havana and Warsaw as well as in the Canada National Defence College.
