Contemporary Practices in Public Space: Dr. Ilana Boltvinik

UR International would like to invite you to a workshop to discuss contemporary practices in public space delivered by our visiting Mexican Chair, Prof. Ilana Boltvinik.

The workshop will begin with a short introduction of the complexities involved in presenting a meaningful intervention in public spaces in general, and in the Mexican context in particular. A sociological, anthropological and archeological perspective will help unravel the multiple layers and heterogeneous meanings that participate in this public practice. Of summon importance will be to understand the difference between art "in" public spaces and art "for" public spaces, being the later a complex practice that permits significant associations with a heterogeneous public and different cultural contexts.

Prof. Ilana Boltvinik is a visual artist, researcher, and a full-time faculty professor at our partner university, Universidad del Claustro de Sor Juana. Her work is concentrated in inter and trans-disciplinary art-based research in dialogue with sociology, anthropology and science. She is currently a Fellow of the Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology, Harvard University. Prof. Boltvinik collaborates in the National Center for the Arts, is a co-founder and works as an independent artist in the collective TRES.
