CSIP Forum: Wildlife Disease Policy During a Pandemic: a Research Imperative

PRESENTED BY: Douglas A. Clark, Associate Professor, School of Environment and Sustainability, University of Saskatchewan

Wildlife diseases are well-studied clinically and ecologically but there is no systematic scholarship on wildlife disease policy or management. Zoonotic diseases, which transmit between animals and people, have become the main source of emerging diseases worldwide. The current COVID-19 pandemic is the latest such zoonosis, highlighting the urgency and importance of monitoring, managing, and addressing zoonotic diseases as well as the acute challenges of doing so with sufficient interjurisdictional coordination in a dynamic societal context. This situation therefore presents a unique research imperative: to understand how decisions are made about preventing and responding to wildlife diseases, especially zoonoses, and how those policy processes can be improved.
