How safe is oil extraction, transportation and refinement in Saskatchewan? Part 2: Oil Transportation

With new oil pipeline construction facing intense political opposition and despite the multiple rail accidents, including the 2013 Lac-Megantic rail disaster, Canadian oil producers continue to increasingly rely on rail to transport their product. Western Canada has seen dramatic growth in oil transport by rail over the past few years, with uploading capacity for crude oil expected to reach 1.4 million barrels per day by the end of 2015. This increased reliance on rail transport has put renewed focus on the safety and regulation of the industry. This presentation by Dr. Simon Enoch will outline the expansion of rail capacity for crude oil in Saskatchewan while also assessing the adequacy of current regulations to ensure the safe transport of this volatile commodity.

This three-part lecture series examines safety in the oil extraction, transportation, and refinement sectors in Saskatchewan. Speakers provide a critical analysis of environmental, community, and occupational safety across the oil supply chain and identify gaps in the existing regulatory regimes. Part three in the series takes place Wednesday, December 2nd.
