How safe is oil extraction, transportation and refinement in Saskatchewan? Part 3: Oil Refining

Since 2011, the Consumer's Co-operative Refinery Ltd. (CCR) has experienced several fires, explosions, and leaks, which have injured workers and put the well-being of the CCR workforce at risk. In spite of assurances that the refinery is safely managed, incidences continue to occur. Drawing on court documents, investigative reports, and key informant interviews, Dr. Sean Tucker reviews the causes of safety events at the CCR between 2011 and 2015.

This three-part lecture series examines safety in the oil extraction, transportation, and refinement sectors in Saskatchewan. Speakers provide a critical analysis of environmental, community, and occupational safety across the oil supply chain and identify gaps in the existing regulatory regimes. Parts one and two of the series took place on Wednesday, November 18th and Wednesday, November 25th.
