Nuclear Development, Communicating Risk and Public Engagement

Presented by:
Larkin Mosscrop, Ph.D. candidate, JSGS, University of Regina
Matthew Dalzell, Professional Affiliate, JSGS, University of Saskatchewan

Conversations about the adoption of technological innovations such as nuclear energy and vaccines frequently revolve around the risks involved. However, what risk actually is and how we perceive it is generally not well understood. As a result, public engagement and discussion about complex technological topics are rarely as meaningful or effective as they could be. Science communicators Larkin Mosscrop and Matthew Dalzell will discuss a conceptual definition of risk, how it is perceived, and how we can talk about it, drawing on examples of conducting public engagement and addressing misconceptions and concerns related to nuclear energy.
