Nuclear Risk, Radiation Exposure and People’s Perceptions

PRESENTED BY: Dazawray Landrie-Parker and Larissa Shasko, PhD candidates, Johnson Shoyama Graduate School of Public Policy (JSGS)

Public attitudes towards nuclear power and other radiation generating technologies used in medicine are influenced by geographical location, Indigeneity, perceptions of risk, age, and expertise of the information source. While Saskatchewan has experience with uranium mining and has entered into a memorandum of understanding with Ontario and New Brunswick in relation to SMRs, 70% of Ontario's power generation is nuclear.

This forum reports findings from a representative survey and 18 focus groups conducted in Saskatchewan and Ontario that explored worries and concerns surrounding radiation exposure and perceptions around future power production sources including renewable energy, nuclear power and Small Modular Reactors (SMRs). Key findings surrounding Indigenous perspectives on different clean energy options, different perceptions by age, trust in nuclear science communicators and actors, and competition between SMRs and other clean and renewable energy options will be explored. The forum will end with next steps in this research.
