Online Movie Night: We Are the Roots: Black Settlers and Their Experiences of Discrimination on the Canadian Prairies

The Department of History at the University of Regina, together with filmmakers Jenna Bailey, David Este, and Deborah Dobbins, invite you to a special screening of "We Are the Roots: Black Settlers and Their Experiences of Discrimination on the Canadian Prairies.

Produced and directed by Jenna Bailey in collaboration with Dr. David Este and Deborah Dobbins, this film tells the story of Black settlers in Alberta and Saskatchewan during the 20th century.

Featuring interviews with many settlers and their descendants, the film offers an in-depth look at what it was like to move from the southern United States and make a new home in prairie Canada.

Highlighting systemic anti-Black discrimination, as well as powerful stories of resistance, this film encourages all to expand their views on settlement in the Canadian colonial period.

Director and Producer Jenna Bailey, together with the film's co-creators David Este and Deborah Dobbins, will be in attendance as special guests. Prior to the film they will provide a 10 minute introduction to the film itself.

After the film, there will be approximately 30 minutes available for discussion.

Everyone is welcome to attend. This event is free and open to all.
