The Myth of the Scientific Detective: A Dissenting View of Sherlock Holmes

A Public Talk by Nils Clausson

The popular image of Sherlock Holmes is that he is the embodiment of logic and reason and that he applies the methods of science to solve crimes. Nils Clausson argues that this view is misleading, based not on the stories themselves, but on the iconic image of Holmes brandishing a magnifying glass (which he rarely uses) and condescendingly intoning, "Elementary, my dear Watson" (words that are never uttered in the stories).

Nils Clausson is Professor Emeritus at the University of Regina, where he taught for 30 years.

All interested members of the public are warmly invited to attend. FREE PARKING will be available in all lots behind the College Building from 5:00 p.m. Refreshments will be served.
