Unimaginable Fury: White Men's Violence Against Indigenous Women

The Stapleford Lecture presents:

Dr. Sherene H. Razack
Distinguished Professor and Penny Kanner Endowed Chair in Women's Studies, Department of Gender Studies, UCLA

The lethal sexual violence that white men direct at Indigenous women, "an unimaginable fury" in the words of Justices Hamilton and Sinclair of the Aboriginal Justice Inquiry in 1991, is a violence that the settler colonial state often condones through law and policy. Why this unending violence and terror, what does it do? How is it so vital to settler colonialism? How do we (settler scholars and others) name it, analyze it and above all work to end it? In this lecture Dr. Razack reflects on this unimaginable fury as we see it in the murders of Indigenous women. She explores how this violence is considered in law and public policy and what would be a feminist, anti-colonial, anti-racist understanding of it.

Dr. Razack's research and teaching focus on racial violence. She is the founder of the virtual research and teaching network Racial Violence Hub ( RacialViolenceHub.com).
