When Animals Talk Back

Distinguished University Professor Don Kulick (Uppsala University) will chart a range of perspectives that explore how humans can communicate with animals. Since the demise in the 1980s of research that attempted to teach human language to apes, other perspectives have arisen. Horse and dog trainers, people with autism who say they understand animals because they think like animals, a ragbag of sundry New Age women who claim to be able to converse with animals through telepathy, and scholars in different disciplines, have started discussing human-animal communication in ways that recast the whole point of thinking about it. In particular, such discussions tell us a great deal about the condition of vulnerability and how we might imagine different ways of engaging with it.
