It’s a day to celebrate student success at the Paul J. Hill School of Business.

Students achieved impressive results at the JDC West Business Competition.

The competition, with the theme “Engaging Diversity,” saw 12 universities competing from Western Canada, was held at the Haskayne School of Business at the University of Calgary January 12-14, 2018.

The Paul J. Hill School of Business placed second for School of the Year. The Hill team has now placed in the top three as School of the Year ten times in the 13 year history of the competition.

The team was led by Co-Captains Rachel Langen and Nicole Pyne and Faculty Coach Randy Linton, Instructor in the Faculty of Business Administration.

“We had pretty much a brand new team going into this year, but they all did a phenomenal job. We’re all really proud of what they achieved.” says Langen. “This competition allows students to apply what they learn in class a variety of real life situations and get some experiential learning.”

Says Pyne: “Students also get to make connections with other students and with our industry. We have a lot of industry leaders and organizations that sponsor us and help the teams develop.”

The student team of Sarah Kreklewich, Bryce Ridell, and Zachery Zabinsky placed first in the Business Strategy category.

Students in the business school were also recognized for their work in the community. The team placed first in the Volunteer Hours category, embracing the University’s motto of ‘As One Who Serves.’

Student teams excelled in other categories as well, placing second in the Tax category and third in the Debate, Finance, and Participation categories.

“We’re proud of the hard work and success of our school and our student teams,” says Dr. David Senkow, Acting Dean of the Paul J. Hill School of Business. “These are the innovative business leaders of the future.”

JDC West is a student-run competition providing opportunities for business students to achieve excellence in academics, social responsibility, sporting, and social competitions.

Community sponsors soundly support U of R business students at JDC West Competitions.

The 2019 competition will be held at the Beedie School of Business at Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, B.C.
