The State of Democracy in 2019

Tue., Mar. 12, 2019 11:30 a.m. - Tue., Mar. 12, 2019 1:00 p.m.

Location: 2155 College Avenue Campus

May and Corbyn - feeding the flames of the Brexit debate; Trump - fanning his base's border wall obsession; Erdogan - jailing hundreds of journalists and teachers for criticism. Today dysfunctional democracy is spanning the globe in the way that, following World War II and later the collapse of the Soviet Union, democracy represented the hope for building just nations and a peaceable world. Has democracy failed to tame sub-national divisions? Have the issues facing nations in this increasingly globalized world become insurmountable? Will democracy fail? This interdisciplinary panel will explore the state of democracy in 2019 as impacted by failures of political restraint, rapid technological change, cultural differences, and new modes of communication.

Join us for this panel discussion moderated by Doug Moen, Executive Director, JSGS, and featuring:

Cheryl Camillo, Assistant Professor, JSGS
Bruno Dupeyron, Associate Professor & Graduate Chair, JSGS
Jim Farney, Department Head, Department of Politics and International Studies, University of Regina
