Frequently Asked Questions

How many classes should I take?

At the UofR, you will have full time status if you take 3, 4, or 5 classes, and part-time status if you take 1 or 2. In university, you will be expected to do a lot of work outside of class time. A good rule to estimate is for every hour of class time, you will do another 2-3 hours of work outside of class. Each class is three hours per week, and so you will need to do another 6-9 hours of work for each class.

Can I drop a class after I sign up for it?

Yes, you can drop a class up to a certain date each semester. The academic schedule will show when you can add and drop classes each semester. It also is important that you speak with your academic advisor before dropping a required class. The class may be a pre-requisite for future classes, and some classes are only offered in certain semesters-therefore not taking a class one semester may slow down the progress of your degree.

I am thinking about switching to a different faculty - can I do that?

Your academic advisor can help you with the transfer process, and explain how your classes will fit into a new program. To transfer to most faculties, you will need to fill out a Re-admit/transfer form. You cannot transfer into competitive entry programs such as nursing, education, social work, and journalism - you must apply for these programs. For more information, click here.

I am trying to register for a class and it's not letting me. Help!

The most common reasons that you will not be able to register in a class are if the class is already full, if you are missing a pre-requisite for the course, or if the class has a lab and you forgot to enter both the class and the lab. Check each of these restrictions carefully, and if you still cannot identify why you cannot register in a class, contact your academic advisor.
