Writing Supports Coordinating Committee

In March 2018, the President’s Writing Skills Task Force submitted its report including a set of recommendations regarding improving student writing skills and closing gaps in writing supports. The Report was presented to the Dean’s Council in June 2018 and the Executive of Council in November 2018. The Report was well received at the Executive of Council.

The Report proposed the immediate implementation of the following recommendation among a number of others:

“Pending the creation of a centralized Writing Centre, those units providing writing support services should collaborate in order to ensure consistency and quality of these services as well as to prevent duplication of writing services. These units include the SSC, English Department Writing Centre, UR International’s Global Learning Centre, Archer Library, and federated college libraries and writing supports.”

Based on this recommendation, a Writing Supports Coordination Committee (“the Committee”) was established at a meeting of the units concerned on February 11, 2019. The objective of the Committee is to ensure continuous collaboration among the units providing writing support services in order to improve the quality and consistency of these services.

The Committee’s mandate is as follows:

1. Review and assess existing writing support services in the light of the Writing Skills Task Force Report and its recommendations;
2. Work toward the goal of closing gaps in writing support services and the goal of continuously improving the quality of these services;
3. Collaborate to prevent unnecessary duplication of writing support services;
4. Develop collaborative mechanisms to ensure the consistency and quality of writing support services (e.g., in the area of training writing tutors);
5. Consult with students and faculty when appropriate.
