Federal funding for research in Canada mostly comes from three agencies:

The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR)

Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC) 

The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council is the Canadian federal funding agency that promotes and supports basic university research and partnered-project research in the natural sciences and engineering.

Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council

The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) is the Canadian federal agency that promotes and supports university-based research and training in the humanities and social sciences.
