Research Facilities



The Environmental Quality Analysis Laboratory (EQAL) is a non-profit research and analysis laboratory at the University of Regina. EQAL provides advanced analytical and data interpretation services to research projects for the University of Regina and other institutions. EQAL is currently equipped with two isotopic ratio mass spectrometers, a gamma spectrometer, a total organic carbon analyzer, and several liquid and gas chromatographic systems.




The Institute of Environmental Change & Society (IECS) is a 6500 sq. ft centre located on the 5th floor of the Research and Innovation Centre (RIC) and is composed of three separate research units and two supporting preparatory facilities. The Stressor Quantification Facility provides instrumentation and expertise to quantify the presence of chemical and biochemical compounds in environmental samples. The Cellular Impacts Facility supports molecular, cellular and system research into the effects of environmental conditions on biological systems. Finally, the Integrated Numeric Analysis Facility provides advances computational infrastructure to analyze large and complex data sets produced by IECS scientists. These units are supported by the Stressor Isolation Facility and the Advanced Sample-Holding Facility which allow complex environmental samples to be prepared and stored for subsequent analyses. Major equipment initially housed at IECS includes a Waters LC/MS/MS for proteomic analyses, a Beckman Coulter cell sorter – flow cytometry system, several stable isotope spectrometers (Thermo Finnigan IRMS, Picarro CRDS), a Zeiss microscope suite and a series of water chemistry analysers.

Aquatics Facility

The department is home to a recently renovated 1700 square foot aquatics facility. The facility has water treatment and holding equipment for housing a wide variety of both fresh- and salt-water aquatic vertebrates. The facility contains six 3500 L circular tanks, four living stream systems, numerous smaller aquaria, two environmental chambers, a cold room, more than sufficient space for animal handling and surgery, and a separate storage and wash-up facility.


Cypress Hills Field Station

The Biology Department manages a field station located about 65 km SW of Maple Creek in the Center Block of Cypress Hills Inter-Provincial Park. Many Honours and Graduate students spend the summer at the field station conducting their own independent research. Additionally the station is used to do field work as part of some undergraduate courses.


George F. Ledingham Herbarium

The late Dr. G.F. Ledingham established the Herbarium in 1945. He devoted a good portion of his lifetime in expanding the collections of the Herbarium, both while he was a full-time faculty member and during twenty plus years of retirement. The Herbarium has over 50,000 vascular plant specimens, 10,000 bryophyte specimens, and 10,000 specimens of lichens.



The Institute for Microbial Systems and Society focusses on functional microbial genomics research, and is located on the third floor of the Research and Innovation Centre.
