Title: Schur multiplication and matrices of operators

Abstract:

In this talk I will develop the theory arising from the entry-wise product of matrices. We will see how this gives examples of completely bounded and completely positive maps, how the theory contains Fourier multipliers as a special case, and some striking characterisations of these Schur multipliers which go back to Grothendieck.

In the second part of the talk I will describe my work to generalise these ideas to matrices with entries in a C*-algebra, how we can obtain new versions of several classical characterisations, and some of the difficulties which we encountered in the more general setting.
