Abstract: In recent years, particle physicists who are constructing detectors often have to operate under limited budget, while maximizing the performance. This requires physicists to carefully simulate detector performance before prototyping and look for possible alternatives to reduce cost. The Heavy Gas Cherenkov (HGC) detector constructed by Dr Garth Huber's research group at UofR, is part of a Particle Identification (PID) package for the new spectrometer at Hall C at theThomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. The HGC project gathered valuable experience and gained expertise on detector R&D within a limited budget. In this presentation, I would like to share our experience throughout the HGC project: including detector design, software simulation, efficiency studies, detector assembly, expected performance etc. The possible future Cherenkov construction project at UofR on Solid Experiment is also briefly introduced.
