Recreation and Fitness Facilities - Winter 2021

Tags: students, all updates

The physical and mental well-being of our students is a top priority for the University, as is the health and safety of our entire campus community. With that in mind, we are pleased to advise that some fitness and recreation facilities and services on the U of R main campus will begin reopening for limited use by students in January 2021. The Faculty of Kinesiology and Health Studies is working closely with our Health, Safety, and Wellness team - and within provincial public health guidelines - to ensure the safe resumption of some of these services for students for the Winter semester.

In January, as long as public health guidelines permit, the University of Regina intends to reopen the Fitness & Lifestyle Centre (FLC) and the Aquatics Centre, and resume some fitness and Rec Sport programming for students with strict health and safety protocols in place including:

  • utilization of a pre-registration process;
  • required mask usage;
  • sanitizing/cleaning protocols;
  • physical distancing;
  • limited capacity and other safety measures.

Comprehensive information regarding the resumption of these activities will be posted on the Kinesiology & Health Studies website by December 11.

For students who are unable to physically come to campus, virtual fitness and wellness programming (including some live-streamed content) will be made available through virtual platforms including Kaltura and Zoom. More information will be posted to the Kinesiology & Health Studies website soon.

We are unable to accommodate a return to these facilities or services for faculty, staff, or community users at this time in order to effectively manage the number of people accessing the facilities and to ensure tight control of health and safety protocols. We will continue to assess the situation on an ongoing basis to determine if expanding access to these facilities beyond our student population is possible while still ensuring the health and safety of our entire campus community.

In March, 2020, coincident with the shift to remote learning and working, the University of Regina shut down all recreation facilities, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.  Unlike several other institutions, the University also suspended the $98 Recreation and Athletic Fee charged to students for the Spring, Summer and Fall 2020 semesters. However, continuing to forego the $1.2 million per semester that this fee generates is not sustainable. These fees, in part, support nearly 70 per cent of the operations expenses related to sport, recreation and wellness programs at the University.  This includes salaries for coaches, trainers, and students on staff, and partial support for fitness and recreation facilities – all costs which continue to be incurred.

The University will begin re-applying the $98 Recreation and Athletic Fee to student accounts for the Winter semester which begins on January 11, 2021. The flat fee will begin appearing on student accounts on November 5 and will be applied to all students registered for one or more courses in Winter 2021 designated as “on campus.” Exemptions will apply only to those students who are exclusively taking courses designated as “off campus.”

We understand the challenges faced by students during these uncertain times and have worked hard to minimize the stress and hardship placed on students to the degree possible.  Our plans to reopen our facilities in a way that manages the risk of COVID-19 confirm our commitment to the health and well-being of our students. Your patience and understanding is appreciated as we continue to navigate through this unprecedented situation.
