University of Regina, Dr. John Archer Library Copyright Liaison Librarian (Two Year Term)

The University of Regina Library invites applications from dynamic, proactive, and service-oriented candidates for the position of Copyright Liaison Librarian, with an anticipated start date of June 1st, 2012. The Dr. John Archer Library supports the research and teaching of faculty and students at the University of Regina through its services, collections and information technology infrastructure. Library staff, numbering 70 in total, connect users to the library collection and other sources of information through traditional reference services, and through the provision of librarian services on-site to academic departments and research centres. Instruction in finding information is also provided, both in the form of general orientations and class or specific subject orientations. The Library’s extensive collection of approximately 2.4 million items is listed in Voyager, as are the holdings of the University’s three federated colleges, Campion College, Luther College, and First Nations University of Canada. The Library also maintains the University Archives whose collections consist of original materials relating to the University, its faculty, staff, and students, dating from the inception of Regina College in 1911 to the present day, and oURspace, a digital repository for scholarly literature, research results, official communications, and materials which define the cultural context of the University of Regina. The Library is a partner with several external organizations, including CRKN (Canadian Research Knowledge Network), COPPUL (Council of Prairie and Pacific University Libraries), CARL (Canadian Association of Research Libraries), the Multitype Library Board, and RegLIN.

About the Position:

This position will report to the University’s Copyright Officer.  The Copyright Liaison Librarian will be a member of the Copyright Team and will work in consultation with the Copyright Officer, Library staff and members of the University Community.  The incumbent will provide assistance to faculty, staff and students in navigating copyright issues, supported by a variety of educational and marketing resources to facilitate and promote compliance with the University’s copyright and fair dealing guidelines.

Working closely with the Copyright Officer, the incumbent will provide input into the development of the University’s copyright awareness program and promote best practices and encourage copyright compliance for faculty, staff and students. The Copyright Liaison Librarian will deliver copyright workshops and respond to copyright information requests from faculty and staff. The successful candidate may be assigned responsibilities as a department head for a related library area.

The Copyright Liaison Librarian will:

  • Respond to copyright information requests from faculty, students and staff.
  • Support the implementation of a campus wide copyright awareness and compliance program.
  • Deliver copyright instruction sessions and workshops, including on-site and distance delivery supported by a variety of electronic means, to faculty, students and staff.
  • Prepare information resources on copyright for distribution or posting on the Library/University website.
  • Provide input into collection development in the area of copyright.
  • Keep up-to-date on issues of copyright law.
  • Further the mission of the Library and the University by undertaking other activities, such as serving on committees, as appropriate.

Required qualifications:

  • An ALA-accredited master’s degree in information/library science.

Desirable qualifications:

  • Strong interest in the area of Canadian copyright law.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Current awareness of trends and best practices in copyright compliance and education programs.
  • Strong interest in teaching and/or library instruction, including distance delivery supported by a variety of electronic means.
  • Strong management, organizational, and interpersonal skills.

  • Salary is based on the academic rank assigned which is commensurate with the candidate’s experience and qualifications.
