The University of Regina Library will celebrate International Open Access Week 2014 by hosting a free workshop on October 21, 2014.

The Rights Well workshop seeks to inform librarians about authors’ rights using an approach that acknowledges librarians both as authors and as consultants to other authors in an academic setting. As authors, librarians have to make the same choices as others about transfer of rights to the publishers of their articles. This workshop trains authors to critically evaluate what is being asked of them in journal publishers’ copyright transfer agreements. Additionally, Rights Well is designed to build confidence among librarians who have added scholarly communication and open access (OA) to their repertoire of expertise in liaison and outreach efforts.

Specifically, attendees will:

• learn what authors’ rights are and why they are important;
• review Sherpa/Romeo as a tool to analyze journal OA policies;
• learn how to analyze various copyright transfer agreements and tools for amending them; and
• gain ideas for tailoring the workshop to other disciplines. 

Session presenter:

Andrea Wirth is a Science Librarian and Associate Professor in the Center for Digital Scholarship and Services and the Teaching and Engagement Department (TED) at Oregon State University Libraries and Press.  Her areas of expertise and interest include collection development and management, scholarly communication, and support for students and faculty in the earth and environmental sciences.  In the Center, Andrea is part of a team that facilitates the addition of OSU research articles to the institutional repository, consults with faculty on OSU’s Open Access Policy, and serves as a member of the Collection Development Council. As a member of TED, Andrea contributes to the overall instruction program of the OSU Libraries. Additionally, she is active in the American Library Association, currently serving as Chair–Elect of the Association for Library Collections and Technical Services (ALCTS) Collection Management Section and as an instructor for two ALA ALCTS online professional development courses.  She received her bachelor’s degree in geology from Oregon State University and her master’s in library science from the University of North Texas.
