The University of Regina Library invites applications from dynamic, proactive, service- and team-oriented candidates for the position of Associate University Librarian (AUL): Content Management and Discovery. We are seeking an innovative librarian with a strong background in the integration of technology, systems and content discovery in an academic setting, and a proven record of leadership and staff engagement.

The University of Regina Library supports the research and teaching of faculty and students at the University of Regina through its services, collections and information technology infrastructure. Users are able to connect to the library collection and other sources of information through traditional reference services, and through the provision of librarian services on-site to academic departments and research centres. Instruction in finding information is also provided, both in the form of general orientations and class or specific subject orientations. The Library’s extensive collection of approximately 2.4 million items is listed in Voyager (currently transitioning to Ex Libris ALMA), as are the holdings of the University’s three federated colleges, Campion College, Luther College, and First Nations University of Canada. The Library also maintains the University Archives whose collections consist of original materials relating to the University, its faculty, staff, and students, dating from the inception of Regina College in 1911 to the present day and oURspace, a digital repository for scholarly literature, research results, official communications, and materials which define the cultural context of the University of Regina and southern Saskatchewan. The Library is a member of CRKN (Canadian Research Knowledge Network), COPPUL (Council of Prairie and Pacific University Libraries), CARL (Canadian Association of Research Libraries), and the Consortium of Academic and Special Libraries of Saskatchewan (CASLS).

About the Position

Reporting to the University Librarian, the AUL: Content Management and Discovery provides vision and leadership to the planning, development, implementation and administration of information technologies and software that support innovative academic library services.

The AUL: Content Management and Discovery has broad oversight of, and provides leadership and mentorship in, areas such as scholarly communication, systems development and implementation, spatial and numerical data services, digital collections, emerging technologies, archives and records management.

Working closely with the University Librarian, AUL: Teaching, Learning and Research and the Library Leadership Team, the AUL: Content Management and Discovery contributes to the development and implementation of the Library’s budget, strategic plan, collections, and services. The AUL provides leadership and mentoring to a team of professionals that together ensure the library remains focused on excellent client services and supports.

The AUL: Content Management and Discovery is responsible for supporting the work of existing and emerging provincial, regional and national consortia including CASLS, COPPUL and CARL. The University of Regina is an adoptive CARL repository, and this position is also responsible for building community and institutional relationships that contribute to the university and broader Saskatchewan content of oURspace.

Additional responsibilities include:

  • Providing leadership to ensure that existing and future information technologies are responsive to the needs of students, library and campus employees, external institutional partners, and community members;
  • Working with librarians and staff to develop priorities, goals and action plans that operationalize the library’s strategic plan;
  • Monitoring academic priorities and growth, and providing leadership in the area of content management and discovery;
  • Anticipating problem areas and acting to avoid conflicts and impediments during the implementation of policies, programs and services; identifying potential policy issues and problems, and developing strategies for resolution;
  • Representing the University Library in institutional and consortial scholarly communication, digital initiative, data and information systems planning forums;
  • Providing vision and leadership for the Library’s technology, archival, and data projects and initiatives;
  • Liaising with campus teaching, research and administrative staff to ensure that user needs are well understood and that library services are aligned with and responsive to present and future needs;
  • Maintaining strong relationships with Information Services to ensure alignment between Library and University initiatives and priorities;
  • Championing institutional record management and archival policies and collections;
  • Fostering a culture of leadership and innovation at all levels within the Library.

Requirements: 

  • An ALA-accredited degree in information/library science;
  • Substantial management experience within the context of an academic or research library;
  • Proven capacity to work flexibly within a senior management team and liaise effectively at a senior level with library suppliers and clients;
  • Proven expertise, experience and publishing/presentation record in at least one of the following areas: library technologies, digital collections, scholarly communication;
  • Demonstrated understanding and knowledge of trends in services and collections supported by library systems and technologies;
  • Demonstrated leadership skills: motivated, enthusiastic, results-oriented;
  • Highly developed interpersonal skills; excellent written and oral communication skills;
  • Demonstrated project management capabilities;
  • Experience with grant writing is an asset.
